AFTERWORD

Chapter 118

Chapter 136

Overview

This chapter is a divine retrospective in which Tanavast (the Almighty) reflects on discovering Roshar ten thousand years ago and making it his dominion after slaying Adonalsium. He recounts his reunion with Cultivation (Koravellium Avast), whom he had loved as a mortal, and their decision to remain on Roshar together despite her initial reluctance to take on godly responsibilities. The chapter closes with an ominous reference to Rayse's arrival.

Summary

Tanavast describes finding Roshar as a newly created world, perfectly designed through mathematical equations and infused with divine potential. He recognized remnants of his predecessor's power in three powerful incarnations and many smaller nature spirits, but felt drawn to the Wind spirit in particular. He also noticed two other worlds nearby—one inhabited by humans, another a cold dark rock with a mysterious metal core. When Cultivation arrived from the void between worlds, Tanavast initially expressed concern that she should not have come, as other gods had forbidden their union. Yet he welcomed her despite sensing his divine power rebelling against this violation of their agreement. Tanavast shaped an avatar form to interact with her more intimately. When Cultivation suggested they find an uninhabited world to experiment with their own creations, Tanavast refused, moved by the songs of Roshar's primitive people who called out to their absent maker. He persuaded Cultivation to remain with him on Roshar, where she could hide and avoid direct worship while he watched over the people. She agreed, drawn to the beauty of the world's night song. The chapter ends with an ominous note: Rayse arrived, suggesting future conflict.
