Chapter 79

This chapter intercuts three major scenes: Renarin navigates a vision of ancient Heralds by following script provided by his spren Glys while trying to identify hidden assassins; Sigzil commands the defense of Narak Four against thunderclasts and Fused forces, successfully rallying troops after demonstrating that the new Focused Ones can be killed; and Adolin fights in the domed arena, executes a reckless charge into the enemy fortification to rescue the fallen Azish Shardbearer Neziham, and encounters the Heavenly One Abidi who recognizes his connection to Notum the honorspren.

Renarin participates in a vision of the original Heralds' meeting, discovering he can access the "script" of events through Glys. This allows him to respond perfectly to conversations, though Glys warns him against always accepting others' expectations. Renarin realizes that genuine vision participants will know their lines while infiltrators like Gav will go off-script, potentially exposing assassins. The vision progresses toward a pivotal moment when Tanavast (Honor) appears before Renarin can secure an anchor.

Simultaneously, Sigzil leads the defense of Narak Four's wall against the thunderclast Kai-garnis and subsequent waves of Fused and Magnified Ones. After the wall breaches, Sigzil coordinates Radiants and ground troops, struggling against a new breed of enemy called Focused Ones—sleek, wrapped creatures whose layered skin resists Shardspears. Using Windrunner speed and Vienta's calculations, Sigzil demonstrates the Focused Ones can be killed by ramming a spear through one's head with sufficient momentum, which rallies the defenders. The arrival of Dami the Stormwall—a Stoneward in massive golden Shardplate—helps push back the enemy assault. Leyten's message diverts Sigzil to investigate something strange on another plateau.

In the domed arena, Adolin fields a coordinated enemy assault that deliberately distracts him from a simultaneous attack on the Azish Shardbearer Neziham on the opposite side. Realizing the deception, Adolin charges through enemy lines, crosses the open field, and breaks into the enemy fortification. Using terror and momentum rather than tactical finesse, he overwhelms singers inside and emerges to rescue Neziham from direforms. Notum, the honorspren, guides him. The Heavenly One Abidi confronts Adolin, revealing he perceives Notum's presence and believes Adolin is a Radiant, claiming Radiant blood eases his thousand years of pain. Abidi retreats when surrounded, and Adolin discovers Hmask followed him into the fortification. Adolin prepares to question Notum about his true nature and Maya's whereabouts.
