Chapter 18
Chapter 21
Overview
As the eight-day deadline before Dalinar's confrontation with Odium approaches, multiple crises erupt simultaneously across the coalition. Wit discovers three lost minutes from a conversation with Odium and realizes he has been manipulated, while Jasnah learns of coordinated enemy offensives targeting Azimir, Thaylen City, and other coalition capitals through Shadesmar. Leaders across the realm—Dalinar, Navani, Queen Fen, and Emperor Yanagawn—are roused from their rest to confront the rapidly deteriorating military situation.
Summary
Dalinar stands alone on his balcony, burdened by the knowledge that he has eight days to defeat Odium, when urgent news arrives that the storm—an enemy offensive—has begun. Jasnah lies awake beside Wit, troubled by their relationship's fundamental dishonesty, when Wit suddenly panics. He discovers he has lost three minutes and twenty-seven seconds from a conversation with Odium approximately a day prior. Initially believing he had bested Odium in their exchange, Wit realizes the entity erased the memory and allowed him to think he won—a sign that Odium has grown and learned to manipulate him. Wit fears Odium may be exploiting loopholes in his agreement with Dalinar. As they examine the written terms, Hendit arrives with news: armies are moving through Shadesmar toward Azimir and will be allowed through the Oathgate. Dalinar has called a meeting at first bell. Navani, unable to sleep despite exploring Urithiru's ancient tunnels, experiences her new bond to the Sibling as overwhelming—she no longer needs sleep and cannot leave the tower for extended periods. The Sibling alerts her that a Windrunner messenger brings critical information to Dalinar. Queen Fen of Thaylen, caught in an intimate moment with her husband Kmakl aboard their docked yacht, is interrupted by a lieutenant bearing dual catastrophes: not only are armies approaching through Shadesmar, but the Veden blockade has been breached by Skybreakers, and an assault force now heads for Thaylen City itself. Emperor Yanagawn, lying awake despite his schedule demanding sleep, is roused by guards escorting Head Vizier Noura with urgent news. The chapter reveals a coordinated multi-front offensive designed to strike at the coalition's capitals simultaneously within the remaining days before Dalinar's deadline.
