AFTERWORD

Chapter 141

Chapter 215

Overview

Adolin endures brutal waves of combat in the defense against overwhelming forces, rotating through pike lines while watching soldiers die around him and wrestling with despair and his hatred of his father. Meanwhile, Jasnah faces Taravangian in a private confrontation where he reveals his manipulation of Thaylen politics and offers her immortality and a role in his cosmic plans, leaving her philosophically defeated and forced to witness Thaylenah formally pledging itself to Odium.

Summary

Adolin rotates through pike-block positions during relentless combat, grieving the dying soldiers around him and questioning the Vorinism doctrine of eternal warfare in the afterlife. He resents his father Dalinar for offering a better vision of the divine while having committed terrible acts, including burning Adolin's mother. When given a rotation break, Adolin considers abandoning the fight but ultimately returns to the front line, drawing unexpected inspiration from Kaladin's endurance as a bridgeman. Meanwhile, Jasnah kneels alone in a temple after Fen negotiates a deal with Odium, recognizing her philosophical and argumentative failure. She realizes her Philosophy of Aspiration collapsed under scrutiny, leaving her without a reliable foundation for truth. Taravangian reappears and reveals that he orchestrated events throughout—falsifying fabrials about detecting Fused, infiltrating the Thaylen Council with long-standing agents from his mortal Diagram, and preparing to murder council members to install loyalists. He explains he willingly accepted Fen's deal because voluntary vassalage serves him better than conquest. Taravangian offers Jasnah immortality and a role as his eventual ruler of the planet, confronting her with the utilitarian logic of her own philosophy: whether obscurity or immortal service to influence a god toward mercy is the greater good. Jasnah cannot logically refute him without lying to herself. The chapter ends with Thaylenah's Central Council formally ratifying a contract making the nation Odium's vassal state, symbolically sealed as a record of Jasnah's defeat.
